POW #9

I thought this picture was cool because of the detail that is shown in the tree trunk.  I think that the different colors of brown and red are cool and that they contrast with the white/light blue sky.  I do wish that the rest of the tree trunk at the top could have been seen better.  I believe that the rule of thirds is used in this picture.

I took this picture with a regular point and shoot camera with no special settings.  I took it outside on a cloudy day around three or four, so the sun was not really out to add any additional lighting.

POW #8

I took this picture while I was in Kentucky.  It is a
picture of my aunt's fireplace in her gorgeous house!

I think that my composition was good because
the fireplace is in the center.  I really liked the symmetry
that is in the picture.  I didn't add any light and used
the sunlight that was shinning in the morning.

In addition, I used a regular point and shoot
camera with normal settings.

Multimedia Project

For my project, I chose the song "My Little Girl" by Tim McGraw because it talks about the singer's love for his daughter.  However, the song could be used to talk about a parent's love for their daughter, which is why I chose it.

In addition, I have my pictures saved to my dropbox account.

POW #7

I really like this picture because I thought it was cool how it was a porch looking into a porch that is looking into a porch . . . . . .

I took this picture when I was in Kentucky with an iPhone and had no special setting on it.  The lighting was just regular sunlight.  I think that the composition is great because the photograph is not slanted and is centered.

I also edited the picture using photoshop.  I was extremely proud of myself because this was the first time that I had used Photoshop to this extent.  The only other time I had used it was to do the picture cut out and my READ poster.

I took out:      wire/box on the right
              rug on the floor
gouge in the banister on the first porch
recycling bin on the third porch
                          chairs on the third porch

POW #6

I think that this picture ws really good composition wise because it was centered in between the two sides and sort of has the rule of thirds in it.  I think that the turkey could have been more in focus and I could have maybe taken out the tree stump in the top right corner and the bunch of leaves in the top left corner.  This picture was taken outside around five, so the sun was almost gone and there was no artificial lighting.  I took it with an iPhone 5 and did no editing to the picture.
I think that this picture fits in with giving thanks because we need to give thanks for the food that we are all able to put on our table, like the turkey.  Our priest once said to be thankful for the things that we don't want to be thankful for because it means that we are alive and living.  So . . . I guess I should be thankful for the mess that I had to clean up after we fried our turkey because it means that I had delicious food to eat on Thanksgiving Day.
       Happy Turkey Day!!

READ Poster

Background Picture

Portrait Picture

Final Product

I really liked my final READ Poster product.  I had to place the READ on the right side because it would have blocked the arrow on the left if the text was on the left side.
It took me a very long time to cut out my portrait picture because I would always end up messing up the selection somehow.  Although Photoshop can be VERY frustrating, I feel like I learned a ton during this assignment.  It has taught me to seek out solutions by myself and to not rely on others for answers.
I had Katie Rose take my portrait  picture for me in Mr. Yocum's room in front of the green screen.  I do think that my selection could have been better, since there are splotches of green and white around my portrait.  However, I feel that it was very good considering it was only my second selection.  There was no additional lighting except for the normal room lighting.
I choose the book Go Ask Alice which is an anonymous diary about a 15/16 year old girl who struggles with doing drugs and choosing the right choice.  This book is really dear to me because I feel that Alice's emotions and feelings are poured out in her diary, and all I can do is watch while her whole life unfolds around her.  I can relate to Alice because she is the same age as me and we share similar characteristics.  I choose the background from http://www.lizaheider.com/.  I choose this particular picture because drug abuse is usually symbolized with an upwards arrow.  Also, I think that the arrow symbolizes the many different choices and consequences that we face in life.  I feel like this book/poster could premote drug abuse awareness in high school teens.

POW #5

Although I really liked the subject of the picture, I think that it is overexposed.  I took the picture around ten in the morning so the sun was very bright.  I took it with a regular point and shoot camera, so I don't know how, or if, I could change the settings.  However, I think that the composition was good and that the rule of thirds is somewhat evident in the picture.  I really like all the different colors of green that are in the picture.

POW #4

Breaking Free

For this picture, I tried to show how the plant was trespassing on its boundaries by growing underneath the wood border.  I tried to make it work in color, but there were some weird color tones going on in the background, so I made it black and white.  I do not think it is my best picture, but I do think that it is  creative.  I think that if the angle of the camera were different to make the rebellious plant more of the focus, it would be better.  Also, I think that if the weeds on the ground appeared "prettier" or were omitted through Photoshop, then the picture would look a lot neater.  I used a regular point and shoot and took the picture late in the afternoon, so the lighting was regular sunlight.

Photoshop Cutout

Before . . .

Cutout . . .
To cut out the picture of Kevin, I used the magnetic lasso tool to select my object.  After I had selected Kevin, I used inverse and changed the background color to white.

POW #3

I saw this message on an announcements board for a church and thought that it was very interesting.  I like how there is contrast between the two trees in the background - one is alive and thriving, while the other looks dead and lifeless which could be interpreted by some as a difference in political parties.  I really like this picture even though it could use a lot of improvements.  I think that the composition could have been more creative. Also, I think that the board could be centered in between the two sides better.  I took this picture with a regular point and shoot outside with normal sunlight for the lighting.

This is the story of how Kevin the turtle was tragically separated from his home and family.
Through may obstacles and tests of courage and faith, he finds his way back to his nice, warm home where his friends await his return.

Kevin is unnoticed as he falls from the dresser into the trash.

Upon finding him in the trash, a garbageman curiously picks Kevin out of the trash.

Bringing him home, the garbageman wraps up Kevin as a birthday present for his son.

Alone and depressed, Kevin tries to cope with his new life.

Before clean-up one day, Kevin is shoved into a car and carlessly thrown into a corner.

While no one is looking, Kevin seizes the opportunity and escapes in his toy car.

Kevin on the road determined to reach his destination.

Kevin, finally home, drives through the front door in excitement.

POW #2

Resting Moth

I like this picture because it is not very busy and focuses on the main subject, the moth.  However, even though the focus is sort of centered on the moth, I think that it could be better.  I took it outside with a regular point and shoot camera, so the lighting was the natural sunlight.  I think that the composition overall could be improved by making the picture more level.  This is because the brick lines are at a slight angle.

Picture of the Week #1

A tree frog lost in a jungle of leaves

I like this photo
because the tree frog is clearly seen and
the black and white helps to focus on the tree frog.
However, I think that the edges of the picture should
be out of focus just a little bit to draw more attention
to the subject.  I think that the composition is good,
but I could of removed the dead leaves off of the soil
to create a cleaner background.  I think that the
lighting of the picture is also good.

Photographer Research

Photographers

The first three photographers interest me because of their powerful war photos.  We may see news in the media or on t.v., but only a photograph can express intense emotions by only one scene.
Their unfathomable stories of what they went through to
take certain shots are still indescribable. Hugo Jaeger's
disturbing collection of Hitler photographs captures
scenes not seen by outsiders. Alfred EIsenstaedt's
heartrending photographs of war children and
average people capture a unique side
of life.  Robert Capa's shots from
WWII let us take a glimpse
into both sides of
the war.
The last two photographers caught my attention because of their graceful photographs of animals.  Each photographer captures
a once-in-a-lifetime moment that portrays the immense
beauty of wild animals. Scott Bourne's intense
colors are bold and literally pop out of
the picture.  Nick Brandt's intense
black and white shots of the
African Sahara silently
urges people to unite
to save the animals
of that land.

Reflection

Through this photo safari, I have learned many things. These ideas have not just been about photography, but seeing your work through the eyes of others. First, I became aware of the different angles and shots of photography. I never knew the difference between a high angle and a low angle shot, let alone even heard of them. Now, I am looking at photography through a whole new "angle".
One very important lesson that I have come to realize is that a photograph that I may think is brilliant may be completely horrible in the eyes of another. Also, a photograph that I may think is gruesomely horrible may be magnificent through someone else's view.
The easiest part of this assignment was separating out the bad photos from the good photos. This was done after the hard portion, the actual taking of the photo. What made this portion hard was making sure all of the elements were included in the photo. Some examples were the angle, the type of shot, and the position of the subject, or in this case the person. This part was challenging because it required me to really think about what I was taking a picture of, and how to take the best picture in my surroundings.
This project will help me in my future projects because it has been a test to see what my skill level is in photography. Although I take pictures for my family, I have never done anything professional with photography. This project has helped me to understand the basics in photography like the angle, lighting, and the different shots. In future assignments, I will build upon my knowledge from this assignment.
I think that my strongest shot was the cornerstone shot. I believe it was my best shot because I was creative in the way I positioned the camera and the angle. However, I think that my weakest photograph is the Championship Form shot. This shot is out of focus and it does not center on the subject. Even though I feel that some of my shots are very weak, I am sure that through this course I will improve on my skills as a photographer and will be able to take pictures that leave a long-lasting impression.
