Current Event #3

Aspirin May Increase Chances of Blindness

Summary: A new study done by Australian scientists shows that regular users of aspirin have a higher chance of developing age-related macular degeneration, and thus, blindness.  The study followed about 2,400 people, 49 years or older, for 15 years.  The participants were put into groups based on their intake of aspirin.  One group, called the "regular" users, included 257 people who took an aspirin at least once a week.  Another group, called the "occasional"users, included the rest of the participants who took an aspirin on occasion.  The study concluded that 1 in 27 of the "occasional" users developed macular degeneration.  Even more frightening, 1 in 10 of the "regular" users developed macular degeneration.  However, one must bear in mind that other variables, such as food, exercise, additional medications, and lifestyle are factors that, while closely monitored, can have an effect on the results.

Significance: I think that this study has a global impacts on the millions of people who take an aspirin as a daily supplement to prevent cancer and heart attacks.  People may be more weary to take aspirin, which can affect their overall health and well-being.  In addition, aspirin sales may decrease for a while until all of the negative side effects are weighed against the beneficial aspects of aspirin.

Reflection: I think that this study has to be taken in moderation.  Sure aspirin may increase macular degeneration and could lead to blindness, but aspirin has long been known to have other dangerous side effects.  Even though aspirin is known to cause intestinal bleeds and ulcers, millions of people rely on aspirin to decrease their risk of cancer, heart attack, and other ailments.  Just because a new study is published to pose another negative side effect, it does not mean that people should suddenly abandon it.    I think that only the doctor knows whether the benefits outweigh the negative aspects of aspirin, and, if taken in moderation, aspirin can be a very important health supplement for many.
