Current Event #5

Judge Ups Bail for Rude Woman
Video Link

Event Summary: In Miami, 18 year old Penelope Soto has now had a taste of jail life.  During her hearing, she was constantly rude to Judge Jorge Rodriguez-Chomat.  She laughed when asked about her jewelry and financial assets, and tended to brush off the Judge's questions like they were nothing.  Before leaving the courtroom, she "politely" told the Judge, "Adios."  Fed up, Judge Jorge summoned her back to the courtroom with a surprise: a raise in her bail from $5,000 to $10,000.  In shock, Soto asked if the judge was serious, and he responded with, "I am serious. Adios." Angered, Soto then proceeded to leave while flipping off the Judge.  Summoning her back again, the Judge sentenced her to 30 days in jail.

Event Significance: I think that this event only had a local significance.  The Judge only affected Penelope Soto's life and no one internationally.  However, this story does have a national and global impact because it opens up other people's eyes to the growing level of disrespect that has crept into today's society.

Personal Response: When I first saw this video, I thought that it was HILARIOUS.  The look on Penelope Soto's face was just priceless; her bright wide eyes, hanging jaw, and raised eyebrows completed the whole story.  I think that, while hilarious, it does point out the growing disrespect that teenagers have in America.
