Event Summary: In Lake Tahoe, NV, researchers are running scared. After searching for invasive fish species, scientists instead found a 4.2 lb. goldfish that was 1.5 ft. long. According to environmental scientist Sudeep Chandra, there were about fifteen other monster goldfish in the same area. The goldfish had most likely been dumped by aquarium owners after the goldfish had grown too big and had become a nuisance.
Event Significance: I think that this story has a local impact. If humans start to impact the environment by inserting foreign species into lakes and ponds, the whole food chain is interrupted. I also think that this story creates a growing awareness to the problem of aquarium dumping.
Response: I thought that this story was interesting due to the shear size of the goldfish, hence the title "Jaws". To think that goldfish like theses could be swimming in our waters makes me scared to go swimming. I understand why people dump them into lakes, but there has to be a better alternative to aquarium dumping.
